New technology used to scan Farringdon - London station roof

October 2012

Roughton has recently been commissioned to work on a project for London Underground to carry out a 3D scan of the roof at Farringdon station. Using cutting-edge technology, in the form of a 3D cloud survey, we have been able to produce a detailed map of this listed structure.

Scanners are set up at different points around the area which is to be mapped and operate by projecting a laser onto the surrounding surfaces. Every surface that the laser hits records a three dimensional point in space. This process is repeated hundreds of thousands of times per second and the resulting data is collated to produce a detailed scan.

The process produces a web interface where the user can interrogate the photographs to identify the exact dimensions of the chosen area.
