The main highway was constructed to provide an alternative route for trucks to travel from Abu Dhabi to the border with Oman, by-passing the city of Al Ain. The construction comprised asphaltic concrete surfacing to the carriageway, surfaced dressed shoulders, reinforced concrete bridges and culverts.
