Client: Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust

The site lies in an urban setting on the fringes of Portsmouth. The Renal Unit is a major facility serving central southern England.

The completed facility treats patients with all nephrological illnesses and provides transplantation and organ retrieval services.

In the main unit there are four dedicated In-patient wards. The In-patient bed capacity was 42, with an additional 6 day unit beds. There is also an outpatient dialysis ward and laboratory-based research facilities.

The project involved altering and refurbishing existing areas on level G, which is at general roof level, and constructing new accommodation on the existing roof over operating theatres and high dependency units - all of which were in constant use.

Accordingly Health and Safety was carefully considered during the design stage and when approving the contractor’s method statements.
