Road infrastructure programme, Costa Rica

Client: Inter-American Development Bank

With technical and financial assistance from the IADB, the Government of the Republic of Costa Rica embarked on a road infrastructure programme to improve the transport links, accessibility and physical integration of the interior of the country with the neighbouring countries of Panama and Nacaragua and with the Port of Limon. National Route 1 connects San Jose, the Capital, with the border with Nacaragua, passing the international airport, the town of Alajuela, the Port of Caldera and many other touristic and urban areas on the way.

Roughton provided technical assistance services, under the following four projects:

  • Feasibility and environmental impact assessment of Route 1, Inter-American Highway, widening to a third lane in the section San Ramon - Barranca - 37km
  • Engineering design for the improvement of Route 4, from Santa Cecilia - Intersection of Route 4 with Route 1 - 26.5km
  • Design of reconstruction or widening of 10 bridges in the Inter-American Highway North
  • Design of 14km of cycleway
