Road network development project, Nepal

Client: Department of Roads, Ministry of Physical Planning and Works

The project comprised approximately 400km of road improvements, including strengthening of approximately 140km of national highway with asphalt overlays, substantial upgrading of rural access roads, and labour-based construction of pro-poverty rural access roads in moutainous terrain, and construction of a 96m steel truss bridge. Additionally, the establishment of performance-based maintenance contracts was required for a further 300km.

Roughton provided the following services:

  • Social/resettlement and environmental impact assessment
  • Detailed design
  • Contract documentation
  • Works contract procurement
  • Construction supervision of all road sections and the steel truss bridge
  • Road safety and traffic engineering
  • Studies and recommendations for axle load control on improved roads
  • Assistance with design, documentation and administration of the PMB contracts
  • Poverty interventions on all road improvement corridors
