Salisbury District Hospital - extension to Cardiac and A&E depts, UK

Client: Salisbury NHS Foundation Trust

The site lies in a rural setting on the fringes of Salisbury. The hospital cares for 200,000 people in Wiltshire, Dorset and Hampshire.

Every year the Accident and Emergency Department caters for 40,000 people and the Cardiac Department cares for several thousand inpatient admissions and surgery cases.

Redevelopment of the A&E department included improvements to the waiting and reception area and facilities for minor injuries. It provides a new dedicated area to treat children, and increase the resuscitation area from two bays to three. The X-Ray unit was relocated into the new A&E department to improve the service.

The reconfiguration and extension to the Cardiac Department provides enhanced facilities for the Cardiac Assessment Clinic, the Cardiac Investigation Unit and the Cardiac Care Team.

The following issues were managed by Roughton:

  • Risk awareness
  • Designated access and egress
  • Hospital environment
  • Phasing of the works
  • Sustainable design - BREEAM rating achieved was Very Good
  • Structural considerations
