Training programme for the use of thin bituminous surface treatments, Ethiopia

Client: DfID under the AFCAP programme and the Ethiopian Roads Authority

The client required a course to improve skills in bituminous surface treatment in Ethiopia. Roughton has successfully introduced a new modular training programme for the use of thin bituminous sufrace treatments based on work previously conducted in Ethiopia.

The modular training project was carried out at the Alegmena Training Centre, Addis Ababa in November 2011, February 2012 and October 2013. The course is aimed at improving the general understanding of sealing technologies, as well as the selection of the most appropriate type of surface treatment and the best design method. It also identified the most suitable construction equipment for the work, the best construction methods and the skills required.

Three separate courses were delivered for each of the following groups:

  • Foremen and operators
  • Technicians
  • Engineers

Some modules were class-room based, some on-site and others were held in materials laboratories. A maximum of 40 participants were taught by two highly experienced professionals, supported by two administrative staff.
