Upgrading of National Highway, Kazakhstan

Client: Committee for Roads, Ministry of Transport and Communications of the Republic of Kazakhstan

The overall project was to upgrade 140km of National Highway (South West Roads) from single carriageway to dual carriageway, under FIDIC MDB harmonised Conditions of Contract. The project includes road safety improvements and two substantial realignments of around 20km each. One to bypass the town of Zhanakuran, and the other to provide a new alignment in the more agricultural areas either side of Shieli, in both cases leaving the existing road for local traffic. The rest of the alignment runs across open steppe.

Roughton was appointed to undertake construction supervision and contract administration services, including:

  • Quality control
  • Measurement and cost control
  • Programme management
  • Reporting and monitoring systems
  • Monitoring compliance with the environmental management plan
