rural accessibility

Roughton strongly believes that reliable access to markets and social services is a vital component of the quality of life for a rural population. The provision of basic, all weather road access can therefore serve as a valuable instrument for rural poverty alleviation and sustainable livelihoods.

In order to ensure the success of our rural access projects we investigate and address all of the following areas:

  • The establishment of a clear rural transport policy and institutional framework
  • Adequate provision for the maintenance of the roads
  • Development of community participation
  • Development of a legal and financial framework which will encourage local communities to claim ownership of the roads
  • Promotion of the use of appropriate technology and its transfer
  • Promotion of the use of local labour to stimulate economy
