water resources

With the increasing challenges of population growth, climate change and pollution placed on our water resources, comes an increasing responsibility to understand, manage and regulate usage of this essential element.

All these things have an impact on the quality of drinking water - the most basic of human requirements, as well as the availability of water for industrial, agricultural and environmental activities.

At Roughton we have over 50 years of experience in helping governments and communities achieve sustainable and economic solutions to their water resource requirements.

Desk top studies & site surveys

In order to identify potential sources of water we undertake various desktop studies and site surveys, such as:

  • Population analysis
  • Demographic forecasts
  • Identification of potential water sources
  • Topgraphic surveys
  • Geotechnical surveys
  • Hydro-geological surveys

Water sources

Principal sources of water are:

  • River abstraction
  • River impounding
  • Boreholes
  • Desalinisation

In determining the most appropriate source, we examine location, environmental impact and sustainability. From the analysis we can:

  • Design and renovate water storage systems
  • Process design to suit a range of water quality needs
  • Design river and groundwater intake works

In the UK and Europe the issues are more legislative - with the EU Water Framework Directive. Roughton’s expertise provides valuable advice to Clients whose business interests and activities are affected by the Directive.
