All weather road access, Tanzania

The overall objective of the project was to construct a number of access roads using appropriate pavement materials in order to develop access benefits for local communities. The project introduced trials on a selection of rural road pavement and surfacing options, specifically involving local-resource solutions and community participation.

Roughton was appointed to provide the following services in two provinces with trial road pavements and surfacing:

  • Design using the Environmentally Optimised Design (EOD) approach
  • Procurement assistance
  • Construction supervision

In addition:

  • Appraisal of environmental and social impact considerations (including resettlement and community participation)
  • Advising on post-project maintenance
  • Establishing monitoring and evaluation of trial sections
