Downlands Primary School, UK

Client: Dorset County Council

Downlands Primary School is situated within the MOD’s Blandford Camp, and accommodates children aged 4 to 11.  The project was to provide better facilities for 210 school children through the provision of a new classroom block for Key Stage 2, as well as partial demolition, extension and refurbishment to the existing school building and extensive external works.

The new classroom block for Key Stage 2 children is a single-storey building with a pitched green roof, providing classrooms, library, music and drama studio and an administration area.

Steel frame was used for the new block, with steel structural deck supporting the green roof and ground bearing concrete slab.

Part of the existing school building was demolished to create an external amphitheatre.  The existing front entrance to the school was extended with a duo-pitched roof, and part of the existing school building was refurbished with a new DDA compliant lift.  A car park was provided at the front of the school, and an extensive landscaped external playing ground with curved retaining walls.

New soakaways were provided to the school following the assessment of inadequate surface water drain.
