Hammersmith Hospital Imaging and MRI Department, UK

Client: Imperial College NHS Trust

Hammersmith Hospital is one of the largest in London.  This project was to allow for the installation of a new dedicated imaging suite for the hospital including 2 new MRI Scanners and a SPECT/CT.

At this busy and live hospital, all works in relation to this new suite of imaging equipment needed to be assessed for complex logistics in regards to working in a live hospital environment.  Deliveries, drilling work and any noisy works needed to be agreed with the trust and the adjacent users.  The MRI machines in particular are extremely heavy and the magnet comes in a single delivery.  To allow for this, the existing façade had to be removed and the lean-to modified to allow access.

Roughton was appointed to provide the following:

  • Structural engineering - analysis and design of the new support structure. Analysis of the existing structure for vibrations and load capacity, this is particularly complex for the case of the sensitive MRI scanning machinery.
  • Site supervision of the structural works to allow for quick and responsive action when site modifications were required.
