HMP Wandsworth - F wing refurbishment, UK

Client: National Offenders Management Service & Vinci Construction

Wandsworth prison was built in 1851 and known at that time as the ‘Surrey House of Correction’. The total operational capacity of the prison is approximately 1,674. This is the largest prison in London and the second largest in Britain, after Liverpool. The prison buildings are listed.

F wing required a complete re-roof as the existing roof was leaking at the gutters and around the connection points on the “big-six” asbestos sheets.

The building housed the visiting section for the families of prisoners and so had to be kept operational throughout the works and especially over the Christmas period.

Roughton carried out the following:

  • An extensive survey of the existing steel truss roof structure
  • Particular attention had to be paid to the bespoke timber guttering, the building being a cruciform shape with difficult corners to accommodate in the detailing.
  • Once the asbestos sheeting was removed, a crash deck was provided to access the steel members so as to assess their condition and any strengthening work required to enable them to carry ductwork & minor plant loadings.
  • The timber gutters were removed and replaced with a pre-formed rigid system, this being an area identified as having been responsible for a number of leaks through the brickwork at the flashing and under the roof /gutter overhang. The new roof consisted of existing steel truss and angle purlin roof with varying degrees of pitch, new steel frame and composite panel.
  • Parapet brickwork was all re-pointed to ensure continuity of weatherproofing.
