Mountjoy School, UK

Client: Dorset County Council

The existing Mountjoy School in Bridport provided education for pupils with severe learning difficulties. The school was advised that it needed to improve its links with a school at secondary level, to satisfy the educational needs of older pupils.

The proposed new Mountjoy Special School is located on the existing Beaminster Technology College campus in Dorset.

The new school is a single storey steel framed structure, approximately 82m long and 26m wide, and provides facilities for classrooms, offices, stores, plant room, hydrotherapy pool, main hall and break out areas.

The steel frame was designed to allow early installation of the steel roof deck, to create a semi watertight cover for construction of the ground floor slab and internal walls.

Surface water drainage is now attenuated and discharged into the existing water course using a flow control system. Foul drainage from the new school is linked into the existing college system.

Roughton provided civil and structural engineering services.
