Puddletown First School, UK

Client: Dorset County Council

Puddletown is a new primary school on a greenfield site in Dorset on the edge of Puddletown village.  The project, which formed part of the Roughton Framework commission with Dorset County Council, involved the structural, infrastructure and drainage design to provide a new 150 place First School.

The site is relatively sloped and as such various considerations were needed for the removal of overland flow water to avoid flooding and affecting adjacent properties.  The Ground conditions were grade Dc chalk allowing strip footings and traditional masonry cavity walls.

In addition there were various requirements for large openings and large classroom spaces, this led to a timber, masonry and steel hybrid structure. Large showcase timber trusses were installed in the classrooms and hall to give the building a strong identity.

Roughton provided the following services:

  • Civil and structural engineering
  • Flood risk assessment
  • Drainage design
  • Feasibility and RIBA Stage C-L
